The Southeast of Sweden includes the three counties of Blekinge, Kalmar and Kronoberg. There are several ambitious energy objectives and policies both on regional and local levels in the region. Both the County of Kalmar as well as the County of Kronoberg have adopted climate strategies. The counties of Kalmar and Kronoberg (Southeast Sweden) set the target to be fossil fuel-free regions in 2030/2050. The counties have implemented the strategies in close collaboration with ESS (climate and energy strategies). The County of Blekinge is on its way to implement a similar document. Already today a high share in renewable energy compared to other regions (65%, EU target is 20%) is used for energy purposes in the counties. The body of acquired knowledge and experiences gained in the region in the past can be transferred to project partners and other regions.

Energy Agency for Southeast Sweden plays an important role in the region. The company is jointly owned by an association where regional councils, counties and municipalities in Blekinge, Kalmar and Kronoberg are members. The Energy Agency's mission is to provide timely, objective and impartial information and knowledge about energy and transport issues. The Energy Agency is working to initiate, coordinate and implement projects aimed at improving the energy efficiency and increased supply of renewable energy in all sectors of society. The agency works strategically and systematically to link the projects at the local and regional level with the projects of the European and international market. The regional Energy Agency for Southeast Sweden Ltd. (ESS) was established as a SAVE-project in 1999 under the framework of the Association of Local Authorities and County Council (the predecessor of Regional Council of Southern Småland) to support the development in the region. The contacts and cooperation between the Regional Councils, Counties of Kalmar, Krononberg and Blekinge and ESS will guarantee their involvement in EnercitEE, giving partners access also to their experiences on both the operational and policy levels. The Energy Agency's approximately 30 employees work in all three counties in offices in Oskarshamn, Kalmar, Karlskrona and the headquarters in Växjö.
